On November 6, 2007, Akorbi's CEO, Claudia Mirza, was recognized as the Microentrepreneur
of the Year by ACCION Texas and Wachovia during the Summit on Microfinance in the
U.S. The award was presented at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio,
TX.
In the early stages of the business, Akorbi's management turned to ACCION Texas
to secure a business loan to fund operations. The loan had such a positive impact
on the success of the business, that ACCION and Wachovia, along with all the respective
bankers who support ACCION, selected Akorbi for its tremendous accomplishments obtained
through the loan.
According to ACCION Texas, the event's host, "The Summit brought together nationally
recognized experts and practitioners to discuss microfinance with the press, the
academy, philanthropy, government, corporations, and the general public."
Due to the high impact that this loan had on the success of Akorbi, Claudia remains
very involved in another microlending organization called the Plan Fund. The Plan
Fund is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist entrepreneurs to achieve
success in starting and/or expanding their small businesses.
